Zimbabwe Adventure Safari: Zambezi Whitewater Rafting

Zimbabwe opens with height, water, and the slow theatre of the Zambezi. On arrival, a private transfer carries you to a lodge close to the river and the Falls, where the first hours bring the heat, birdsong, and wide African light into focus. When international arrival time permits, the journey begins on the water with a sunset cruise along the Zambezi. Guests arriving too late for a comfortable departure are instead given time to settle before the evening’s hosted dinner, with the river experience rearranged where the wider programme allows.

Dinner is reserved for a signature moment setting chosen for atmosphere, warm hosting, and a strong sense of place.  After dinner, guests can savour the final glow of daylight from a famous bar balcony, overlooking a bustling waterhole where wildlife drifts in for their evening drink. Overnight: Victoria Falls

Today brings you face to face with one of the world’s great natural thresholds: Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya — “the smoke that thunders.” The Falls stretch approximately 1,708 metres across the Zambezi before the river plunges into a chain of basalt gorges shaped over geological time.

Your local expert leads you through rainforest paths and carefully positioned viewpoints, where the scale becomes immediate: spray against the skin, rainbows forming and disappearing in the mist, and the sound of the water carrying through the trees. Along the way, the experience connects the Falls with the river’s ecology, birdlife, local history and the gorge system below.

Later, a helicopter flight reveals the full architecture of the landscape from above — river, cliff, rainforest, bridge and the sequence of gorges carved into the earth. Flight operation depends on weather and aviation conditions.

Overnight: Victoria Falls

Livingstone Island sits in the Zambezi just above the point where the river drops over Victoria Falls, making it one of the most charged river-edge experiences in southern Africa. With cross-border arrangements handled in advance, your guide takes you upstream to the island, where the geography of the Falls becomes sharply clear: calm channels above, the lip of the cascade ahead, and the gorge waiting beyond the rock. When water levels allow, Devil’s Pool or Angel’s Pool brings you into controlled contact with that edge. The power of the experience is not just the photograph; it is the knowledge of where you are — in the last still water before one of the world’s largest waterfall systems breaks into the gorge below. The afternoon can be shaped around spa time, a poolside lunch, or a guided craft and market encounter before dinner.

Livingstone Island is accessed from the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. Cross-border transfers and assistance are coordinated in advance, although guests remain responsible for holding the correct passport and visa permissions for entry into Zambia and return to Zimbabwe.

Livingstone Island and its natural swimming pools operate according to Zambezi water levels. Devil’s Pool generally operates between mid-August and late December, but access cannot be guaranteed. When the pools are closed, we arrange the most suitable available alternative.

Today brings you to the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, suspended above the gorge between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Built in the early twentieth century as a railway connection, the bridge remains one of the region’s most recognisable feats of engineering.

After a professional safety briefing, eligible guests step onto the platform for a 111-metre bungee jump above the Zambezi. The setting gives the experience its power: steel beneath your feet, basalt walls on either side and the river moving through the gorge below.

Participation is subject to the operator’s age, weight and medical requirements. A non-jumping alternative can be arranged for guests who prefer to experience the bridge without taking the leap.

Overnight: Victoria Falls

The Zambezi becomes the day’s main route as professional river guides lead guests into the Batoka Gorge for a whitewater rafting experience beneath steep basalt walls and raw African wilderness. Depending on water levels and safety conditions, the river reveals one of Africa’s most powerful whitewater runs — a physical, guide-led descent shaped by briefing, equipment fitting, rapid navigation, lunch on the river, and a coordinated return to the lodge for dinner.

This is the section that gives Zambezi rafting its reputation: Grade 5 rapids, fast commands, hard paddle strokes, sudden drops, and surging hydraulics. For Rich Hippy guests, the reward is not sightseeing, but participation — a chance to meet the Zambezi through courage, teamwork, instinct, and movement, gaining a deeper respect for the river by being carried through its power rather than simply standing beside it.

Rafting operates according to Zambezi water levels, weather, river access and the daily safety assessment of the licensed operator. When the planned section cannot operate safely, we replace it with an included Batoka Gorge or Victoria Falls adventure of comparable duration and value, selected according to current conditions and the guest’s physical requirements.

Today reveals another side of Batoka Gorge through a professionally operated adventure confirmed before departure. According to seasonal access, current conditions and the physical profile of the group, the selected experience may centre on zip-lining, a high-wire gorge circuit, bridge-based adventure or a guided canyon route. The exact activity, duration, inclusions and participation requirements are confirmed in writing before booking.

Guests who do not meet the operator’s participation requirements, or who prefer a less physically demanding day, are offered a suitable scenic or cultural alternative.

Overnight: Victoria Falls

The route moves into Hwange safari country, shifting the journey from spectacle to tracking. A private transfer carries guests away from the drama of Victoria Falls and toward Zimbabwe’s largest national park — around 14,650 square kilometres of woodland, pans, and wildlife corridors.

Hwange is known especially for elephants, wild dogs, sable, and roan, but its deeper appeal is the feeling of entering proper safari terrain: dust, spoor, distant calls, open sky, and the slow patience of the bush. Dinner is hosted at the safari lodge as night settles over the wilderness.

Overnight: Hwange Wilderness

The morning drive moves through pale light and dust, with guides reading the small evidence that most people miss: fresh tracks near a pan, alarm calls in the trees, the direction of elephant movement, the sudden stillness that changes the air around a sighting. After breakfast, the journey continues south, leaving safari woodland and turning toward granite country. Matobo announces itself gradually: domes rising from the earth, boulders balanced in improbable stacks, the land becoming older, stranger, and more sculptural with every mile. Arrival is timed for dinner at the lodge or, where possible, a first sunset among the kopjes, with warm stone and long shadows.

Matobo introduces a different scale of wilderness. Granite domes rise above the surrounding landscape, while immense boulders balance in formations shaped over millions of years.

A specialist local guide leads you through the hills on a route adapted to the group’s ability. The day combines granite walking, elevated viewpoints and carefully interpreted rock-art sites that preserve evidence of San spiritual life, movement and connection with the land.

Rather than treating the paintings as decoration, your guide explains their cultural context, symbolism and relationship with the surrounding landscape. Time is built in for photography, rest and a final sunset among the kopjes.

Overnight: Matobo Hills

The final morning remains close to Matobo’s granite landscape. Depending on departure timing, we arrange a short guided walk, a viewpoint breakfast or a quiet morning at the lodge.
