Tanzania Grand Traverse is a 14-day journey from Arusha through Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti before flying onwards to Stone Town and Zanzibar’s Indian Ocean coast. Designed for those who want the scale and excitement of safari balanced with culture and island stillness, it brings Tanzania’s most compelling landscapes into one beautifully paced route. Private safari travel, expert local guidance, a scheduled bush flight, private island transfers and thoughtfully chosen stays are arranged throughout, allowing you to remain absorbed in the experience.

Across the northern wilderness, ancient baobabs rise above elephant country, Ngorongoro’s volcanic walls enclose a remarkable concentration of wildlife and the Serengeti opens into seemingly endless plains. Your guide follows tracks, alarm calls, rainfall and seasonal movement, shaping each day around the strongest wildlife encounters. Lion, leopard and cheetah occupy this immense ecosystem, while an optional balloon flight reveals its rivers, kopjes and roaming herds from the air.

From the Serengeti, you fly directly towards Zanzibar, trading open savannah for carved doors, dhow sails and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Stone Town introduces the island’s layered Swahili heritage before the pace eases along the coast, where coral gardens, white sand and uninterrupted beach days create space to swim, snorkel and rest.

From the possibility of elephants beneath ancient baobabs to Zanzibar’s coral-fringed waters, this is Tanzania in its fullest expression—wild, sunlit and beautifully unhurried.

Highlights
    • Two nights in Tarangire within landscapes known for ancient baobabs, significant elephant populations and the life-giving Tarangire River.
    • Descend into Ngorongoro Crater in search of lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos and the possibility of black rhino.
    • Four consecutive nights in the Serengeti, creating time to respond to current wildlife activity, seasonal movement and changing conditions.
    • Scheduled bush flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, avoiding an unnecessary return through the northern safari circuit.
    • UNESCO-listed Stone Town with a local expert before sailing its historic waterfront aboard a traditional dhow.
    • Mnemba’s coral gardens, tropical reef fish and clear turquoise water on a guided marine experience.
What makes this Journey Exceptional
    • A complete Tanzania arc — Connect Tarangire, Ngorongoro, the Serengeti, historic Stone Town and Zanzibar’s coast in one efficient journey from wilderness to ocean.

    • The Rich Hippy Way — Private, curated, hosted, with optional upgrades arranged around pace and guest profile.
Itinerary

Your private driver is waiting when you arrive and takes you to an especially selected lodge near Arusha. The first day is deliberately gentle, giving you time to recover from the international journey, meet your local safari team and settle into Tanzania’s rhythm.

Before dinner, your local expert introduces the landscapes ahead and confirms the arrangements for the northern circuit.

Overnight: Arusha

Your private safari vehicle carries you southwest into Tarangire, a landscape shaped by ancient baobabs, seasonal wetlands and the river sustaining much of the surrounding ecosystem. Morning and afternoon game drives are arranged around current conditions. Your local expert reads tracks, recent reports and changes around the water sources while searching for Tarangire’s elephant families, lion, giraffe, buffalo and varied plains game. Nothing in the wilderness is staged or guaranteed. Routes remain flexible, allowing your guide to respond to wildlife movement rather than follow a predetermined checklist. Time on safari is balanced with quieter hours at your lodge. Where permits, lodge location and operating conditions allow, we can also arrange an authorised walking safari or night drive, introducing animal signs, smaller species and the ecosystem beyond daylight game viewing.

Overnight: Tarangire

After a final morning in Tarangire, your driver takes you into the cooler Ngorongoro Highlands. Dry savannah gradually gives way to farmland, forest and volcanic landscapes before you arrive at an especially selected highlands or crater-rim stay. The following morning, your safari vehicle descends approximately 600 metres into the Ngorongoro Crater. Grassland, woodland, freshwater pools and soda lakes create a compact but remarkably varied wildlife environment. Your local expert searches the crater floor for lion, buffalo, hippo, elephant, hyena and the possibility of black rhino. Sightings remain entirely natural, but the crater’s geography provides an opportunity to observe several connected habitats during a single carefully paced descent. After a picnic lunch, the journey continues west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The highlands fall away and the Serengeti begins to open ahead, with wildlife encounters possible along the route to camp.

Overnight: Ngorongoro crater rim on Day 4, Serengeti on Day 5

Four nights in the Serengeti give your local expert the time and flexibility to follow current conditions rather than rush between famous locations. Each morning begins by reading the landscape: fresh tracks, distant alarm calls, weather patterns and information shared between experienced guides. These details help determine the strongest direction for the day, whether towards open grassland, river systems, rocky kopjes or quieter reaches of the park. The Serengeti supports lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, giraffe and immense populations of grazing animals, but their movements can never be scheduled. Rainfall shifts the grazing. Herds respond. Predators follow. The uncertainty is not a limitation of the safari; it is what makes each encounter real. Depending on the season and location of the camp, game drives may search for resident predator territories, gathering wildebeest and zebra, hippo pools or sections of the wider migration system. The Great Migration is a continuous natural movement, and neither its precise location nor dramatic events such as river crossings can be guaranteed. The schedule balances early wildlife activity with quieter hours at camp and golden-light afternoon drives. An optional sunrise balloon flight can also be arranged, subject to weather and availability, followed by breakfast in the wilderness.

Overnight: Serengeti

A scheduled bush flight carries you from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, operating directly or through a suitable connection according to the confirmed timetable. Your private island driver is waiting on arrival and takes you into Stone Town. A local expert introduces the historic centre through carved doors, shaded courtyards, markets and waterfront streets shaped by centuries of African, Arab, Indian and European influence. As evening approaches, a traditional dhow sailing experience offers a softer view of the old city from the water, subject to suitable weather and sea conditions. The following morning allows further time in Stone Town before your driver takes you across the island to an especially selected coastal retreat. Spice farms, villages and tropical vegetation line the road as the journey moves towards its restorative chapter.

Overnight: Stone Town on Day 9; Zanzibar coast on Day 10

For the final days we arrange a guided marine experience in the Mnemba area, with the precise snorkelling sites selected according to wind, tides, visibility and sea conditions. The surrounding marine environment supports coral gardens, reef fish and other ocean life, although specific encounters cannot be guaranteed. The focus is the quality of the marine setting rather than pursuing or promising a particular species.

The remaining time can be shaped around personal interests. We can arrange spice-farm experiences, village encounters, cooking sessions, diving, water sports, wellness treatments or private boat journeys. Guests wanting complete rest can leave the schedule open. There is time to swim, read, rest beneath the palms or finish the journey with a specially arranged beachfront dinner as the light falls across the Indian Ocean.

Overnight: Zanzibar Coast

After a final breakfast beside the ocean, your private driver takes you to Zanzibar Airport. Departure arrangements are coordinated around the confirmed international flight schedule, with additional island time or an onward East African journey available separately.
