Mafia Island Diving Expedition: Drift Into Depths

On arrival in Dar es Salaam, VIP assistance and a private transfer to a carefully selected boutique stay are waiting. The remainder of the day is intentionally light, allowing time to recover from the international journey before the following morning’s flight to Mafia Island.

A scheduled domestic flight carries you south from Dar es Salaam to Mafia Island. On arrival, our local team welcomes you and coordinates the private vehicle and, where required, boat transfer to your especially selected stay.

Depending on journey style, availability and guest preference, your base may be an atmospheric treehouse retreat or a characterful beachfront lodge. After settling in, the afternoon remains deliberately unhurried, with time to swim, rest beneath the palms or become familiar with the island’s slower rhythm. Your underwater adventure kicks off with a pro-guided snorkel safari through Chole Bay’s kaleidoscopic reefs — camera included. After a sandbank lunch that feels like a private castaway dream, you’ll explore the haunting Kua Ruins swallowed by jungle. Back at the lodge, drift into evening with music, myth, and stories of the sea.

An early ocean safari takes you in search of whale sharks as they move through the waters surrounding Mafia Island. When conditions and wildlife movements allow, guests may have the opportunity to enter the water under the supervision of the specialist crew. Sightings and swimming encounters are entirely natural and cannot be guaranteed.

The experience operates seasonally, generally between October and March, with the final timing determined by local conditions. Back at the lodge, the afternoon slows through guided breathwork, restorative movement and a palm-shaded massage.

Certified divers enter the coral landscapes of Kinasi Pass with qualified local instructors, discovering reef walls, marine life and the shifting currents that shape this part of the archipelago. Dive sites are selected according to guest experience, tides and daily sea conditions.

Beginners can join an introductory scuba experience in suitable conditions, while non-divers explore the reef with a marine biologist through guided snorkelling and reef interpretation.

Guests wishing to complete a full PADI qualification can add a structured certification course before departure, allowing sufficient training time to be built into the journey.

When you think it can’t get dreamier — enter your private sandbank escape. Today is shaped by the tides. When conditions align, a private dhow carries you towards a remote sandbank for swimming, snorkelling and an unhurried barefoot lunch beside the water. Hammocks, shaded seating and quiet time create a deliberate pause after the previous days’ ocean activity.

The exact location and timing are selected by the local crew according to tides, weather and marine-park conditions. The experience may be enhanced with sunset dining, acoustic Swahili music or private photography arrangements.

On day seven, you’ll cross to soulful Chole Island, where time bends around baobabs, coral-stone ruins, and centuries-old dhow-building traditions. Meet local artisans, witness real-time conservation work, and leave your mark by contributing to marine protection efforts. Your final night closes with a Swahili tasting menu — the flavours of the coast, elevated and unforgettable.

The final morning is left deliberately unhurried, with time for a swim, a quiet breakfast and one last view across the water.

Your private transfer returns you to Mafia Airport for the scheduled flight to Dar es Salaam. On arrival, we coordinate your onward international connection, private transfer or selected journey extension.
